On February 5, 2024, Italian luxury fashion brand MaxMara revealed its Pre-Fall collection 'Magic Circus,' inspired by 'Calder's Circus,' one of the most beloved pieces in the Whitney Museum of American Art in Manhattan, New York, and a hallmark of the world-renowned sculptor Alexander Calder.
'Calder's Circus' features a tightly connected ensemble of acrobats, nets, flags, carpets, lamps, instruments, and hundreds of props, all under a towering flagpole with a triangular pennant, made from materials such as wire, wood, metal, fabric, cork, and string, each piece exuding its own personality and charm.
MaxMara's collection, like Calder's works, is vibrant, with each look reflecting the personality of a diverse set of characters such as a stage director, a strong woman, Pierrot, acrobats, and magicians, showcased through red, white, camel, and black leopard prints, bold stripes, unique dots, and star patterns. Twill fabric shorts with pannier structures are daringly styled under masculine blazers, matched with mini pareos.
Poplin shirt dresses are adorned with pie crust frills for added sleeve volume, paired with meticulously tailored coat dresses, asymmetrical one-shoulder bodysuits, organza trench coats, and jumpsuits with bib designs, all perfectly styled with this season's thin-strapped silver Mary Janes.
MaxMara's Pre-Fall collection, offering a variety of looks from summer dresses perfect for the city to T-shirts with vibrant prints inspired by circus tents, will be available from June onwards.
